This shift has only accelerated with the rapid expansion of data centers and electrification, which has created surging demand for skilled electricians while compressing schedules across competing projects.

To keep up, contractors are shifting more work offsite, and many have invested in dedicated prefabrication shops and VDC (Virtual Design and Construction) teams. In fact, in 2023, industry research cited by EC&M found that 83% of electrical contractors had a prefab shop, though many of these shops functioned more like “extensions of the jobsite” than independent production facilities.
As contractors look for additional ways to optimize offsite production without overloading their own shops, modular wiring systems can further extend their prefabrication strategy by shifting repetitive lighting branch-circuit assembly into a controlled manufacturing environment.
